Last Thursday, Melbourne's The Emporium shone a little bit brighter as hundreds of guests queued outside to attend The Diamond Drop presented by #1800Tequila as part of Melbourne Fashion Week. Hosted by style guru Elliot Garnaut, guests sipped Palomas served in mini 1800 bottles while anticipation built for the $15,000 diamond prize. 

When contestant 39 from Darwin struck gold - or clear, as the case may be -  the moment was the perfect metaphor for the week where clarity, quality and taste were front and centre.

“I would say the sign’s the smallest part of the restaurant,” says Ian Tran, aka design studio @DomusVim. “The sign comes in last, and it’s a nice part where everyone goes, ‘Yes, we're here now’. It's a point of place-making.”

For over a decade, Tran has been making the signs for some of Sydney and Melbourne’s hottest restaurants. Striking as they are – clean, sleek laser-cut shapes that mix cold metal with playful shades of Perspex and acrylic – you can say his designs are a trusted road-map to the best places to eat in town.

Recently, the designer sat down with Esquire for an edition of Studio Sessions to discuss his creative process, favourite restaurant, and dream collaborators.
