Best Air Jordan 4s

AT THE RISK OF alienating our less basketball-inclined readers, allow us to begin by painting a word picture. It’s the 1989 NBA playoffs and only seconds remain in the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers’ win-or-go-home matchup in game five of their first round series. The heavily favoured, 3-seeded Cavs have just taken a 100-99 lead with three seconds left on the clock. Michael Jordan, already an MVP winner but yet to be an NBA champion, is the man everyone in Ohio’s Richfield Coliseum knows will be taking the last shot. He catches the inbound pass, creates separation, rises and sinks the buzzer-beating, game-winning jumpshot to send the Cavs packing and the Bulls into the next round. Euphoria ensues.

It’s a moment that is sewn into the fabric of NBA history, to such an extent that it has come to be known simply as ‘the shot’. But what’s its relevance to an article about sneakers, you ask? Well, Jordan happened to be wearing a pair of Air Jordan 4s at the time, a model that had only released a few months earlier. As he bounced around in celebration, he gave the world a look at his new kicks and immediately made them one of the world’s most-wanted shoes.

The Air Jordan 4 marked the first time an Air Jordan was released globally. It was also the first shoe in the lineup to feature the signature over-moulded mesh. These details mean it has a special place in the history of the Air Jordan, but the AJ4 hasn’t always been as popular as the AJ1 or AJ3. Instead, it has become something of a niche sneaker, of interest to a particularly devoted segment of the sneakerhead community. But, thanks to some recent high profile collabs and a resurgent interest in some retro colourways after teaming up with Nike SB, that’s starting to change.

Which Air Jordan 4 is the best? That’s what we’re here to decide. Read on for our top ten Air Jordan 4s, ranked.

Which Air Jordan 4s are the best?

10. Air Jordan 4 ‘Black Cat’

Best Air Jordan 4s Black Cat

Michael Jordan has always gone by a multitude of nicknames. ‘MJ’ is easily the most prevalent. ‘Air Jordan’ is also up there, obviously. ‘His Airness’ gets thrown around from time to time. ‘Black Cat’, on the other hand, is not used as often, but it was enough for Nike to use as a design cue for the ‘Black Cat’ AJ4, a sleek and sexy all-black sneaker. A re-release will be arriving later in 2025.

9. Air Jordan 4 ‘University Blue’

Elvis was onto something, because a good pair of blue suede shoes is hard to beat. But what really makes the University Blue AJ4 click is the meaningful reason for the colourway – the fact that Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina, wears the same shade of baby blue. The speckled finish and jock tag-adorned tongue are fun bonuses.

8. Air Jordan 4 Retro SE ‘Wet Cement’

Released in 2024 to coincide with the Paris Olympics, the Wet Cement edition of the AJ4 draws inspiration from Paris’ cobblestone streets with an all-grey colourway. It boasts a distinctively urban aesthetic, with its mix of nubuck leather and suede giving texture and dimension to the grey hues.

7. Air Jordan 4 Retro SB ‘Navy’

Back in 2023, the AJ4 sought some assistance from Nike SB to remaster the silhouette with minor tweaks and tech upgrades that, while honouring the OG version, ultimately made it more practical as a skateboarding sneaker. This Navy model is the first AJ4 x SB sneaker to appear on this list, but due to the widespread acclaim the revamped line has received, you can be certain that it won’t be the last. Some of the new features Nike SB introduced include a reworked sole construction, a Poron forefoot sock liner, and a dual leather and suede upper.

6. Air Jordan 4 ‘White Oreo’

Best Air Jordan 4s White Oreo

The first Oreo-inspired AJ4 – retroactively called Black Oreo – was released in 1999. It featured a speckled black and white colourway inspired by Oreo cookies. In 2020, they flipped the colourway around, introducing a new model known as White Oreo that took inspiration from the white cream inside an Oreo. We prefer the newer of the two, as the white base with grey streaks and black flecks is a little easier on the eyes.

5. Air Jordan 4 ‘Fire Red’

Best Air Jordan 4s Fire Red

One of the original AJ4 colourways, Michael Jordan frequently wore this Fire Red colourway on the court. The primary red and white tones meshed well with the Bulls’ home jersey, making it an obvious choice for Jordan. Those frequent on-court appearances only increased Fire Red’s appeal, and it remains a valued collector’s item more than 35 years later.

4. Air Jordan 4 Retro SB ‘Pine Green’

Like the Navy AJ4, Pine Green tinkers with Tinker Hatfield’s original design to make it more suitable for skateboarding. It boasts a reworked toe box for an improved fit, a deconstructed upper and plastic detailing. Nike Air units in the heel add some cushioning, while a zonal gum rubber on the outsole boosts traction. A colour scheme straight from the vault, the colour-blocking is a nod to the OG AJ4s, while the pine green accents serve as the flavour du jour.

3. Air Jordan 4 x Travis Scott ‘Cactus Jack’

Best Air Jordan 4s Cactus Jack Travis Scott

In spite of some of the controversies surrounding the rapper, everything Travis Scott touches in the fashion world seems to turn to gold. He has collaborated on a number of Air Jordan silhouettes, but he saved his best work for the AJ4. The sky blue colour of the upper is an homage to Scott’s hometown football team, the now-defunct Houston Oilers, and the logo on the inner sole and the left heel are references to Scott’s Cactus Jack record label.

2. Air Jordan 4 ‘Bred’

Best Air Jordan 4s Bred

The pair Jordan was wearing when he hit ‘The Shot’, the Bred colourway is the most popular of all AJ4s. Debuting at the 1989 All Star game, Bred had sneakerheads hooked from day one. Colour coded with the Bulls’ away jersey, the shoes became synonymous with Jordan’s rise and have only grown in value over time. A 2019 re-release brought back Nike Air branding for the first time since 1999, further increasing Bred’s appeal.

1. Air Jordan 4 x Nigel Sylvester ‘Brick By Brick’

Best Air Jordan 4s brick by brick

It may have only released in March of 2025, but we already believe that BMX rider Nigel Sylvester’s collaborative AJ4 is the best of the bunch. The all-red design immediately brings to mind images of Jordan rocking the OGs on the Bulls, but it’s actually inspired by New York City’s red-bricked streets where Sylvester grew up, hence the Brick By Brick moniker. The sail midsole and suede upper – which we’re told is not red, but is in fact firewood orange – enhance the look by delivering a striking contrast. On the heel, the traditional Nike branding is replaced by the word ‘Bike’ – a nod to Sylvester’s day job – atop a swoosh. Smaller details like the mini embroidered swoosh on the forefoot and reflective accents complete the design and help set it apart.

Are Air Jordan 4 comfortable?

Air Jordan 4s are generally considered to be comfortable shoes. They’re made to be worn, and seeing as they were originally designed for on-court performance, you can safely assume they’ll be comfortable enough for all-day wear. That’s not to say that Air Jordan 4s are the most comfortable shoe on the market, however. If that’s what you’re after, it might be best to look elsewhere.

How do Air Jordan 4 fit?

According to Nike, Air Jordan 4s typically fit true to size. Although, for those with a wider foot, it is recommended to go a half size up.

How to style Air Jordan 4

Like almost all Air Jordans, AJ4s are versatile and can be styled for a number of different occasions. For a casual vibe, you can pair them with graphic tees, hoodies, tracksuit pants or joggers. For something more elevated, slim-fit or tapered pants like chinos or jeans, along with a nice top and jacket, are a good choice.
