THERE ARE certain items of clothing that become permanently attached to the men who wore them.

Steve McQueen had the Baracuta G9. Michael Jordan had the Air Jordan 1.

Daniel Craig, in his debut outing as James Bond in Casino Royale, had a dark navy Sunspel polo shirt that managed to make knitwear look vaguely dangerous.

Twenty years on, Sunspel is marking the anniversary of its Riviera Polo with a limited-edition version made from Sea Island cotton, the famously rare Caribbean fibre prized for its softness, strength and almost silk-like finish.

The Riviera itself dates back much further.

Originally developed in the 1950s for warm weather on the Côte d’Azur, it was built around a lightweight cotton mesh designed to stay breathable in heat.

But it was the Bond connection that transformed it into one of modern menswear’s most recognisable polos. Working with Casino Royale costume designer Lindy Hemming, Sunspel sharpened the fit for Craig’s famously more athletic Bond, shortening the sleeves and streamlining the silhouette.

The new anniversary edition keeps that same cut, now rendered in Sunspel’s signature navy Sea Island cotton.

Which is fitting, really. Bond was never much of a novelty-shirt man.
