The best new series and films coming to Netflix Australia in May
May will see a new season of 'The Four Seasons', a replacement for 'Stranger Things' and the streaming debuts of big 2025 films like 'Bugonia' and 'Mickey 17'

HAS ANYONE ELSE responded to the evaporation of any and all humidity with a desire to enjoy more simple movie nights at home? Sure, you can enjoy such a simple pleasure at any time of year, but the cosiness factor brought into play by cooler weather is a difference maker. There isn’t a better time to cosy up on the couch (drink of choice in hand, snacks within reach) and watch your favourite TV show or a new film than now. It helps that there’s also plenty to watch on Netflix at the moment.
First, The Four Seasons is getting a second season, with the comedy crew setting their sights on a new slate of holiday destinations. Then there’s new sci-fi series The Boroughs, which can count the Stranger Things creators as executive producers. On the film front, watch out for the streaming debuts of a number of big releases from 2025, including Mickey 17 and Bugonia. And if you’re a tennis fan, stay tuned for Rafa, a documentary series about (as you can probably guess) Rafael Nadal.
In any case, it’s a good time to have a Netflix subscription. The streaming service is packed with content, and this May will see yet another wave of new shows and movies heading to the platform. The new content is arriving in such quantities that choosing what to watch becomes its own challenge. That’s where we come in. To help you find what’s worth watching on Netflix in May, we’ve rounded up the best new pieces of content coming to the streamer.
Scroll on, and get ready to add to your watchlist.

The Four Seasons, season 2 (May 28th)

Imagine if all your favourite comedians were best buddies and went on vacations together all around the world, and you could be a fly on the wall during their shenanigans. Well, you don’t have to imagine it, because that’s the premise of The Four Seasons, which is coming back for a second season. Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Marco Calvani and Erika Henningsen are the aforementioned members of the gang – and while we don’t want to spoil anything in case you haven’t seen season one, one of these friends won’t be returning. Season two will feature a similar setup, with the cast visiting various holiday destinations while confronting their relationship troubles and the realities of getting older.
The Boroughs (May 21st)
If you’re still mourning the death of Stranger Things, you’ll find a replacement with a similar vibe in The Boroughs. It’s also a sci-fi mystery set in a small town, and it even has the Stranger Things creators serving as executive producers. But it swaps out a group of kids for a group of retirees. The series logline is as follows: “In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret.” Barring the retirement community aspect, does that not sound exactly like Stranger Things?
Rafa (May 29th)
This four-part documentary series will follow the final season of Rafael Nadal’s legendary career. It blends never-before-seen archival footage with interviews with Nadal, his family and his inner circle. In case you need a refresher on Nadal’s final season, here it is: he was consistently hampered by injuries and didn’t make many deeps runs at any big tournaments, but he did get a final matchup with Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Paris Olympics. To make things more interesting, the series will look back at some of the earlier moments in Nadal’s career that made him the player that he was.

Bugonia (May 21st)
Oscar nominee Bugonia will make its Australian streaming debut on Netflix in May. The film was one of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2025 and earned four Oscar nominations, include Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Emma Stone. This is Stone’s fourth collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos, and like the director’s previous work, it’s a black comedy with several absurdist elements. It follows two paranoid conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aiden Delbis) who kidnap a powerful CEO (Stone), because they suspect she’s an alien who wants to destroy Earth.
Mickey 17 (May 23rd)
Mickey 17 was Bong Joon-Ho’s first film since the Best Picture-winning Parasite. Adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel ‘Mickey7’ (yes, the use of 17 rather than 7 was deliberate), it stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey, an expendable worker on an interstellar voyage. Mickey is repeatedly given menial (but dangerous) tasks that result in his death, at which point his consciousness is transferred to a clone and the process repeats itself. It’s a futuristic satire of the uppity tech bros who argue that caring about the environment is for bleeding-heart lefties and believe that earth (and the normies who populate it) are disposable because humanity can simply find a replacement planet elsewhere.
