Ryan Gosling's vintage red Comic Con jacket is pure James Dean. Here's how to replicate it on a budget

EVERY and again, a celebrity will pull on a piece of clothing that feels predestined for menswear moodboards.

There’s the late Robin Williams’ Issey Miyake nylon bomber, which he wore to the 1997 premiere of Flubber, and of course Tom Cruise’s Top Gun aviators. More recently, there was Prada’s instantly recognisable True Love shirt, featuring a graphic by French artist Christophe Chemin, which was favoured by A$AP Rocky, Virgil Abloh and even Kanye, back when he was sort of favourable.

Now, you can add Ryan Gosling’s new-ish red jacket to that list.

This weekend he took to the stage at Comic-Con, where he was announcing his arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider. He did so wearing a beaten-up red vintage Ralph Lauren RRL denim jacket from the 1980s. It featured a camel-hued corduroy collar, which Gosling nonchalantly popped, James Dean-style. It was all remarkably Rebel Without a Cause-coded, especially as he wore it over another Dean staple: the white tee. We reckon the late menswear icon might even have traded in his own signature scarlet Harrington – the one that sends menswear nuts everywhere into a spin – for Gosling’s jacket.

But this is the Gos, who has an army of stylists behind him and can get hold of pretty much anything he wants to wear – and has a habit of turning jacket into menswear must-haves (remember the Drive bomber?). Which means, sadly, the jacket is no longer available to us normal guys. One recently sold on eBay, and we’re pretty sure that’s the one now on Gosling’s back. The clue? Gosling rolled the sleeves, as he would need to with the XL jacket we found online.

That being said, you don’t actually need to spend hours in vintage shops, or trawl through the infinite pages of eBay, to copy Gosling’s James Dean-esque look. Nor do you need a fat Marvel pay cheque. See below for some jacket options — from Harringtons to denim jackets — that will help you get the look.

Our advice? Do as Ryan and James did, and wear yours with a white crew-neck T-shirt and muted jeans to let the red do the talking. Versatile and just playful enough, it’s the sort of jacket you can throw on for post-work drinks or a Saturday stroll around the farmers’ market. Or to announce your new place in the MCU. Easy.
