Serena Williams’ shiny Wimbledon Royal Oak deserves its own spotlight
The pinnacle of sports and luxury crossover
SERENA WILLIAMS seven-time champion of the tournament, made her return to Wimbledon on day two, playing her first singles game since the US Open four years ago. She may have lost the match to Australian player Maya Joint, but we couldn’t keep our eyes off of Williams’ watch for the entire game.
Fans of the tennis legend will likely know that she’s been an ambassador and partner for luxury Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet since 2014, and has a pretty extensive collection of watches from the brand (including more than 10 different Royal Oak models she’s worn over the years). But this time, she took to Centre Court with one of Audemars Piguet’s sportier, though still unbelievably luxurious-looking and stylish, models.

Williams sported the Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph in a 37mm titanium case, framed by a bezel set with 32 brilliant-cut diamonds. Its pink Tapisserie dial, paired with an interchangeable rubber strap in the same colour, featured 18-carat white gold hands and silver-toned 18-carat pink gold numerals. It has a sporty, slightly bulky, style but still makes a fashion statement – it’s the perfect way for a legend of sport and style to make her return to one of the world’s biggest tournaments.
Unsurprisingly, the watch retails for approximately $65, 250, placing it firmly in the high-end of luxury timepieces. But this is Serena Williams, one of the 21st century’s biggest icons of tennis who firmly reshaped the sport and (alongside her sister, Venus) paved the way for the next generation of black women in tennis, like Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff. So, really, should we have expected anything less?
