The best TV series, movies and documentaries to stream in April
Stuck on deciding what to stream? Stop wasting your time scrolling, because Esquire's April streaming guide has got you covered

THE STREAMING LANDSCAPE is getting a big shake-up this month. Right when you thought you’d reached your limit of streaming subscriptions, Max is launching in Australia, and with it, a range of content will be migrating from Binge to the newcomer. Binge no longer has the rights to HBO originals or Warner Bros films, but White Lotus fans needn’t worry as we approach the grand finale (read out recap of the latest episode here), as all remaining episodes will still stream on Binge.
Max is coming in hot, with The Last Of Us season two coming to the platform on April 14th. The established streamers aren’t going to go down without a fight, however. The long-awaited seventh season of Black Mirror is coming to Netflix, as is season five of You. Over on Disney+ Andor is back for its second and final season. Amazon Prime also has a new Jacob Elordi-led series premiering, The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
With so much new content on offer, choosing what to spend your precious time watching is the hardest part. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and now Max are so packed with must-watch films and shows that it can be difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the back burner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.
Not to worry, though, Esquire has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms, so you know what to stream in April 2025.
What’s new on Netflix Australia, April 2025
April Netflix Highlight – Black Mirror, season 7
A big month lies ahead for Netflix, with a number of beloved series returning for new seasons. Foremost among them is the seventh season of Black Mirror. The dystopian sci-fi series that poses questions about the dangers of technology has returned after a two-year hiatus. Details on the season’s episodes are scarce, but we do know that one of them will be a sequel to season 4 episode USS Callister – the one where Jesse Plemons cloned his colleagues into a video game spaceship so he could torment them. Outside of the flagship episode, brace yourself for some more scarily prescient predictions about the future of technology.
Also coming to Netflix in April is the fifth (and final) season of You. Penn Badgley returns as Joe, a serial killer who stalks a series of women. It’s getting harder and harder for Joe to get away with his crimes though, as his victims have started putting up some resistance. If we had to guess, we’d say that the final season of You could bring about Joe’s downfall. And for your action fix, look to Havoc on April 25th, which stars Tom Hardy as a jaded cop tasked with saving a politician’s son after a botched drug heist.

What’s new on Disney+ Australia, April 2025
April Disney+ Highlight – Andor, season 2
The most critically acclaimed Disney+ Star Wars series to date, Andor largely eschews the standard Star-Wars-iness that endears the franchise to its fans but isolates outsiders who aren’t already well-versed in almost 50 years of lore. Instead, Andor tells a grittier story about political espionage and rebellion during a time of oppression. It could stand on its own outside of the Star Wars universe, but works just as well in it. The first three episodes of season two will drop on April 23rd.

What’s new on Stan, April 2025
April Stan Highlight – Scrublands, season 2
A Stan original, Scrublands is back for a sophomore season. Based on a crime novel by Chris Hammer, the first season of Scrublands was set in a rural New South Wales town one year removed from the massacre of five parishioners by the leader of their congregation. Investigative journalist Martin Scarsden arrived to write a feature on the tragedy for its anniversary, but ended up uncovering that the previously accepted narrative wasn’t the full truth. Now, in season two, Scarsden is returning to his coastal hometown to find that his partner has been accused of murdering his closest childhood friend.
Also new on Stan is the fourth season of comedy-drama Hacks, and the streaming debut of the Oscar-nominated and Australian-made Memoir of a Snail.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video Australia, April 2025
April Amazon Prime Video Highlight – The Narrow Road to the Deep North
An adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Narrow Road to the Deep North stars Jacob Elordi as Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans. We follow Evans across multiple time periods, beginning with his experience as a prisoner-of-war on the Thailand-Burma Railway during WWII, a time he is clearly haunted by when we find him later in life, as a respected doctor and Australian war hero. The trajectory of Evans’ life is reshaped by a brief love affair with a woman named Amy Mulvaney and the story of its fallout is told over multiple decades.
The next big action hit is also coming to Amazon Prime in April. G20, which stars Viola Davis as a gun-toting US President, follows the mayhem that ensues after a group of terrorists take over a G20 Summit and take a number of world leaders hostage. Security is notably absent, and it’s up to the ex-military Prez played by Davis to protect her family, fellow leaders and the world from total chaos.

What’s new on Max, April 2025
April Max Highlight – The Last Of Us, season 2
Leading the charge in Max’s first month in Australia is Pedro Pascal’s return to the post-apocalypse in season two of The Last of Us. For those who are real desperate to find out what happens next, we suggest picking up the video game on which the series is based, because season one stuck very close to its source material. Resuming a few years after the previous season’s chaotic finale, Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie have found their way to Joel’s brother’s settlement in Wyoming. All is well, but when a figure from Joel’s past shows up and is keen on revenge, a new fight for survival begins.
