JOSH JESSUP AND MATT MOSS are in their gardening era. The designers and content creators are best known for sharing videos that chronicle their interior design and creative projects, but ever since moving into and renovating their new house in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, the two have enjoyed getting their hands dirty. “I’d say even though we’re most known for interiors, we’re particularly proud of our garden,” says Moss. “It’s such an important part of the home having a connection to nature and the outdoors and our garden has truly elevated our home experience.”

Surrounded by native forests and in proximity to a vibrant local arts scene, the mountainous region is particularly suited to the couple’s approach to maximalism and colour. They cite inspiration from Memphis Milano and Verner Panton’s natural shapes in bright hues; even the louder elements, their ochre Porsche Cayan for instance, blends in with the landscape. It’s in their garden where their edition of Esquire‘s Five Fits takes place, where they’re seeing this approach manifest in nature. Paths paved in pebbles and stones; curations of moss and flowers; their post-modern furniture are spread out across the space; there are hollows to simply perch on. It’s like a terrarium made human size.

For our first couples Five Fits, the duo took Esquire through five of their favourite coordinated (!) outfits while telling us about how their interest in interiors began, the first piece of furniture they bought together, their advice for first-time furniture collectors, and the parallels between their personal style and their approach to interiors.

Josh (right) & Matt both wear Tommy Hilfiger tops and pants, and Golden Goose shoes.

Esquire: Firstly, where did you grow up, and where do you currently call home?

Josh Jessup: I grew up in Inala, Queensland.

Matt Moss: And I’m from Toowoomba in Queensland, now we live near the Macedon Ranges in Victoria.

What was considered ‘stylish’ or ‘cool’ when you were growing up?

JJ: I was always obsessed with Converse [laughs] they were my dream shoes and I would always keep an eye out for them when I went thrifting with my parents.

MM: I was always drawn to bright graphic clothes when I was growing up. I watched a lot of cartoons so I think I just wanted to feel like I was part of that world, at least I thought it was cool!

Was there a moment when you first became interested in clothing and style?

JJ: I think for my fashion, [it] really became an extension of myself in my teen years and I’ve just kept experimenting and evolving since!

MM: When I was in my teen years and started seeing others expressing themselves through their style online on MySpace and Tumblr, it made me want to find my own personal style!

“Spending our first influencer pay check on our first pair of Issey Miyake Pleats Please, and I’ve never looked back,” says Jessup.

Do you have a fashion memory that has shaped the way that you dress?

JJ: Spending our first influencer pay check on our first pairs of Issey Miyake Pleats Please, and I’ve never looked back. They’re so comfortable, versatile and timeless. I’m nearly always wearing a pair.

MM: When I first used Depop and found a water ripple graphic button up shirt that was so nostalgic it really reminded me of what I was drawn to when I was younger. It made me want to keep finding more of them and now I have an obsession with Prada double match shirts, but still yet to get one!

Your personal styles and interior design blend seamlessly together. For the uninitiated, how would you describe your taste?

JJ: I’d say quite eclectic. I’m drawn to colour, pattern and texture so you’ll find that a lot in our clothing and style.

What was the first piece of furniture you bought as a couple?

JJ: When we first moved in together we went on an Ikea shopping spree and filled our apartment with almost the entire LACK collection [laughs].

How did you find your passion for interior design?

JJ: It’s always been an interest and passion of mine since I can remember. Growing up I wanted to be an architect and that slowly evolved into a stronger interest in the interior world.

MM: Josh got me really interested in interiors when we first met and ever since then our two perspectives on interiors have merged together into a real fun personal style for our home.

What have been some of your interior design influences?

MM: We love breaking the rules and thinking outside the box, so Memphis Milano and gufram we’re really drawn to. Also love the work of Kelly Wearstler.

What have you enjoyed most about renovating your house? Is there a space you’re particularly proud of?

JJ: I’d say we’ve enjoyed the complete freedom of doing whatever we want to our home, it’s always been a dream of ours to own a home and turn it into a place that truly reflects us.

MM: I’d say even though we’re most known for interiors we’re particularly proud of our garden! It’s such an important part of the home having a connection to nature and the outdoors and our garden has truly elevated our home experience.

Is there a theme or criteria you look for when purchasing a new piece of furniture?

JJ: We love thrifting because we always look for unique or one-off pieces and also furniture that will last. That’s why thrifting is great because if you come across a 30-year-old coffee table, chances are it’ll survive another 30 years.

MM: We really just are guided by how objects make us feel and what we’re drawn to. We love to collect with an open mind and be open to whatever we may find.

Tell us about the hardest piece you’ve acquired.

JJ: Probably our bend sofa by b&b Italia, had to fight for it at an auction, hire a removalist truck and pick it up ourselves! A labour of love that’s for sure.

What advice would you give a reader who wants to start collecting furniture?

MM: Our number one advice would be to expose yourself to as many vintage and thrift stores as possible because the more you browse the more you’ll discover what you’re drawn to and increase the chances of coming across something truly special. Facebook Marketplace is an amazing resource to start your collecting and you can grab a bargain too.

How, if at all, has your personal style changed over time?

JJ: I’d say we’ve become a lot more confident in who we are and you’ll see that reflected in our fashion now. It’s playful, loud and eye catching which I guess sums our our interior style too.

Are there any fashion brands that you’re loving at the moment?

JJ: We love Marimekko, Issey Miyake, Jacquemus to name a few.

What about furniture designers, any you’re watching right now?

JJ: I really want to add a gufram cactus to our collection, or the living tower by Verner Panton.

If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it consist of?

JJ: We’d definitely be wearing Issey Miyake.

MM: Yeah, I think we’d be in top to bottom Issey Miyake. It’s like pyjamas I can wear outside of the house.

Where are some of your favourite spots to shop for clothes/furniture in Melbourne?

JJ: Honestly our go-to is Depop, that’s actually where about 80 per cent of our clothes are from. You save a lot of money and help keep clothes in circulation – what’s not to love?!

Can you tell me about any upcoming projects?

MM: We’re about to be working on our backyard which we’re particularly excited about because we will have a stargazing dome and a chicken zone!
